Do you get a Tax Deduction for Volunteering for a Charity?

The IRS unfortunately does not let you deduct the value of your time or services when you volunteer for a charity. But that does not mean you cannot deduct anything related to your volunteering, the IRS does let you deduct expenses related to your volunteering on a Schedule A:

• Mileage – you can deduct mileage you drive to the charity event or to drop off supplies to the event.

• Expenses related directly to the volunteering and the expenses have not been reimbursed. A simple example of this would be if you purchase office supplies to use at the charity event, the cost would be deductible.

• You can take actual auto expenses such as gas or you can take your mileage. The charity mileage rate for 2020 is 14 cents per mile.
